SHAME ON YOU
Presented within the II National Performance in Public Space Competition TIME OUT 2022 — guest artist.
Shame on You is a performance that examines shame as a mechanism of persuasion and disruption, perceived as a loss of reputation, and as a social fantasy that provokes fear in those who invoke it.
Performed unannounced in a public plaza, the work unfolds through direct encounters with passersby, who are handed widely known popular sayings that denigrate women. By bringing these phrases into the open, the performance exposes how normalized language perpetuates symbolic violence, inviting reflection on the unconscious repetition of misogynistic expressions.
Set within the Mexican cultural context, Shame on You functions as a public reminder that such sayings must be questioned and unlearned. The work calls for an interruption of inherited speech patterns, urging collective responsibility and encouraging individuals to stop reproducing them — without shame, and without fear of rejection.
